Frank's Short Library: Section One

Section One is made up of pieces I have personally written. Commitment Magic is the longest piece in the entire library. In the spirit of this “short” library, this story is also chunked down into six separate readings that provide enough of a lesson if read separately. This e-book is another attempt to present the framework I developed to better understand commitment. My earlier, and longer book, The Power of Total Commitment, was written in late 1989 and 1990. Other topics of leadership found here were written to support the various training and development programs I have designed and facilitated with my wonderful clients.

COMMITMENT

Commitment Magic – The Complete Book

This book summarizes the framework for “commitment” found by studying Excellent Managers for the research conducted for IBM and the design of their Excellent Manager Program. The book is organized around a model for understanding the dynamics of commitment around a set of supporting behaviors and a set of improving behaviors.

Commitment Magic – Introduction

If you would prefer to read the book in sections, the following six links take you through the book sequentially. In the introduction section the story line is built, along with the lesson that commitment is made up of a combination of belief and persistence in action toward that belief.

Commitment Magic – Focus & Example

The second section of the story begins to flesh out the concept of “supporting” one's commitments through a combination of focusing on what is important and leading by example.

Commitment Magic – Reward & Respect

The third section of the story completes the concept of “improving” one's commitments through a combination of rewarding others who demonstrate focus & example, along with building respect and managing disrespect toward your commitments.

Commitment Magic – Look & Learn

The fourth section of the story begins to flesh out the concept of “improving” one's commitments through a combination of looking for a better way and learning from others.

Commitment Magic – Challenge & Risk

The fifth section of the story completes the concept of “improving” one's commitments through a combination of challenging expectations and risk making changes.

Commitment Magic – Summary

The last section of the story summarizes the model and points to the importance of balance between the interdependent sets of "supporting" and "improving" behaviors.

"Leadership is found at the intersection of character and commitment; what others perceive you stand for and do."
