Frank's Short Library: Section Three

Section Three is made up of summaries of various books I have read that have left a lasting impact on my thinking. Many good books provide us with something memorable, and worth applying the lesson learned.  Other books are filled with such wisdom.  In each book found here I have copied exact quotes in the order in which they appeared in the book. What you will read will feel somewhat like “stream of consciousness.”  Many times a quote stands on its own merit.  By reading all the quotes, there can be a deeper insight into the author's wisdom.

The Tipping Point – by Malcolm Gladwell

The Tipping Point has a theme that is perfectly captured in the sub-title. This being how little things can make a big difference. This book helps us understand why some things catch on and others do not. His three main concepts are: The Law of the Few; The Stickiness Factor; and, The Power of Context

Complexity – by M. Mitchell Waldrop

This book chronicles what happened in the early days of The Santa Fe Institute, a group of famous physicists who wanted to broaden out from their own narrow views. By forming a multi-disciplinary community the thinking evolved to one of understanding “complex adaptive systems.” Understanding how systems work is esssential for anyone who wants to effectively influence them.

Fierce Conversations – by Susan Scott

This book is filled with pearls of wisdom about how to communicate more effectively. Readiing the advise given here may help instil the courage and confidence to have the conversations we know we need to have and for whatever reason have avoided.

Leadership: The Art of Conversation – by Kim H. Krisco

This is a book filled with good ideas about effective communication.   Leaders make a difference by creating possibilities and breakthroughs. They do this through the way they speak and listen. The conversations they start change the world around them, in small and big ways.

"Leadership is found at the intersection of character and commitment; what others perceive you stand for and do."
