Design and Creation of Japanese Gardens

Design Principle: ASYMMETRY

West Linn, OR

No garden practice has taken the path to such refinement as the Japanese.  A good design is roughly 70% functional, and 30% artistic.   Straight lines are used in moderation.  A windy path often symbolizes the twists and turns one finds in life.  The path’s construction dictates how a traveler will experience the garden.  Properly designed, the garden path will guide the participant’s eyes (what will be revealed) and movement through the garden (when it will be revealed).

Interestingly, balance is achieved by avoiding symmetry.  The objects rarely will be of the same size, shape, or distance from each other.  As an evergreen, pine signifies longevity and permanence.
