Design and Creation of Japanese Gardens

Design Principle: FOCUS

West Linn, OR

In the Japanese tradition, man is subordinate to nature.  Nature is the focal point in the garden, while man is the companion.  Other garden traditions actually reverse these roles.  Knowing the perspective you want to achieve is very important in the overall design.  Design follows the knowledge of what is central and most important.  Too much emphasis on what is not core leads to a loss of proper focus.

In this (Kari-Sansui) dry stream landscape, there are two objects showing the influence of man in the scene.  In the foreground a small retaining wall, holds back the simulated erosion by the action of the stream.  Further away, upstream, the man-made bridge offers a safe means of crossing the brook.
