Design and Creation of Japanese Gardens

Design Principle: MOVEMENT

Carmel, CA

The effect of a well-designed Japanese Garden is an overriding sense of harmony, peace and tranquility.  Interestingly, it is also a place of energy and movement.  The placement of every stone moves energy in a certain direction.  How a tree branch extends from the trunk and is pruned, gives a sense of movement.  When the elements within the garden are positioned to properly flow, the result is a natural correctness and grace.

Showing some aspects, and hiding other aspects, of a garden, compels the human spirit to discover its secrets.  This Japanese principle tempers our need to see everything at once.  It also explains why the Japanese became so sophisticated with their fence making and enclosed spaces.  The intimacy of finding gardens within gardens is an enchanting aspect of this tradition.  Instead of showing every thing at once, one must show patience and restraint to fully appreciate the journey.
