The Excellent Manager

In meeting the challenges that face business, this workshop employs practical methods for developing the only truly sustainable competitive advantage you have, the commitment of your employees. Successful professionals demonstrate strong commitment and can develop high levels of commitment from those around them. This workshop deals specifically with what to do, and what not to do, to foster long lasting commitment.

An additional resource to this material is the superb book (Absolute Honesty) and workshop (Straight Talk) that can be found at www.rwassociates.net

The research that went into this workshop originated with studying excellent managers in a number of Fortune 50 companies. What stood out most clearly from this research was that the key to leadership and management excellence lies in the practice of commitment.  What was less apparent was exactly how commitment was practiced in day-to-day behavior.  The key discovery of this research was commitment is made up of two interrelated, and almost contradictory, sets of behavior.  To achieve long-term commitment both sets must be practiced on a constant basis.

The two interrelated sets of behavior that together ensures long-term commitment are:

Supporting Behavior: to demonstrate and gain commitment from others you must focus on what's important, lead by example, reward success, and build respect (manage disrespect).  Support is demonstrated and experienced by others when a leader applies all four behaviors.

Improving Behavior:  to demonstrate and gain commitment from others you must look for a better way, learn from others, challenge expectations, and risk making changes.  Genuine improvement comes, once again, when it is the combination of all four behaviors that is demonstrated by the leader.

Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • How focus and positive example are not so easy to maintain
  • What to do and avoid in rewarding others
  • The significance of effectively standing up to disrespect
  • Why constant efforts to improve need to be balanced with support
  • The role of taking risks and excellence
