Train-the-Coach for Behavioral Coaching

The purpose of the 2-Day Train-the-Coach program, delivered exclusively through Marshall Goldsmith Partners, is to develop the ability and willingness of internal organizational resources to effectively coach others in positive, long-term behavioral change.  In order to do a good job, a coach needs to have a well-defined process that does not require a lot of extra time or effort on the part of the leader, the leader’s stakeholders, or the coach.  Coaches learn how to help leaders gain leverage through the monthly application of a few simple actions that provide a huge payoff.
Coaches will learn the flow of coaching activities from initial contact through conclusion of the coaching engagement, which is typically a year in length.  Prior to attending the highly interactive workshop, participants are expected to read The Coaching Playbook that details the critical Do's & Don’ts of how successful people get even better.  Learning this unique, revolutionary process is a key element of this Train-the-Coach.  The workshop itself is devoted to skill practice in real life coaching situations.

The Principles on which this coaching methodology is based are:

Emphasize Feedforward: the focus is on future oriented suggestions for improvement

Reduce in spite of” while building off of because of” behaviors: all of us are prone to continue some behavior that is not conducive to improving; and, successful people have some characteristics that are vital to tap into to achieve positive change in behavior

Place attention on the Stakeholders: the center of attention here is not the coach; it is not even the leader who is committed to improving.  The major attention of the process is on the Stakeholders who are affected by the behavior undergoing change

Change behavior and perception: it is not only necessary for a leader to change; it is also necessary for those people around the leader to see”the change and believe the leader will not regress to old patterns

Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • How the belief set of successful people both helps & hinders improvement
  • Coaching the 8-Step Encouraging Development process
  • The 7 Coaching Skills that facilitate positive behavioral change
  • Understanding the principles that underlie this “results-based” coaching
  • How to get off to a smart start, improve as you move, and sustain success
